Lead with the problem you solved, not the tools you used
"I redesigned the onboarding flow that was causing 40% of new users to drop off in the first week" is compelling. "I'm a UX designer proficient in Figma and user research" is not. Open with impact.
Reference a specific aspect of their product
Spend 15 minutes in their actual product or app before writing. Find one thing that could be improved or one design decision that impressed you. Mentioning it shows you're actually interested in their specific design challenges — not just looking for any UX job.
Include your portfolio link prominently
Put the portfolio URL in the first paragraph. Every other piece of advice is secondary. Hiring managers will make their decision based on your work, not your letter — but the letter has to get them to click.
