Account Executive Negotiation Tactics That Work

Negotiate the OTE structure, not just the base

For AEs, the on-target earnings (OTE) split and attainment structure matter more than base. Ask: what percentage of reps hit quota? What's the ramp period and is quota prorated? What's the accelerator above 100%? These details are more important than the base salary.

Ask about territory and book of business

An AE with a strong existing territory or warm inbound pipeline is in a fundamentally different position than one starting cold. Ask about the territory you'd inherit, the current pipeline state, and how leads are distributed — before you evaluate the OTE.

Use competing AE offers with comparable OTE structures

AE negotiation is most effective with a competing offer at a comparable deal size and cycle. If you have one, use it. If you don't, use public AE comp data (Levels.fyi, LinkedIn Salary, Glassdoor) for your specific market segment (SMB/mid-market/enterprise).

Use this as a starting point — personalize with your specific numbers and context.

I'm really excited about this opportunity — the product-market fit and deal size are exactly what I've been targeting. I'd love to get to $[X] OTE with a [60/40 or 50/50] split. I also want to clarify the ramp structure and quota attainment rates before I finalize — those details matter a lot for how I evaluate the total package. Happy to discuss.
